The vast majority of economic opinion was swinging towards at least a 0.25% rate increase today from the first board meeting of the Reserve Bank of Australia. This was met with the unexpected - a hold on the official cash rate for the time being. The rate stays at 3.75%

The Reserve Bank of Australia met today to discuss the state of the global economic crisis, and how Australia is faring in comparison to other countries, including its trading partners. They have determined that another modest drop in the official cash rate is necessary to continue to stabilise the downturn.

It never ceases to amaze me how quickly banks will raise mortgage rates when the official cash rate goes up (in some cases even before!) and yet how slow those very same banks are to pass on a rate saving to the customer.
